My original idea was to have a small black-and-white pen-and-ink drawing on the left-hand page, with the baby kangaroo and his parent having their conversation, and a full-color, full-bleed picture on the right, showing what baby kangaroo is boasting about.

The art department at Bradbury had other ideas—they asked for color on the kangaroos, a decorated border around them, and extending the right-hand page over onto the left. It was an interesting experience for me.
